PHIL 2070 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Pragmatism, Environmental Ethics, Eutrophication
Document Summary
This distort our understanding of ourselves and wild nature. Environmental pragmatists ask us to imagine new ways of living with, and in, nature. Motivating values for individuals within a group are usually diverse: economic, cultural, political, religious, aesthetic, spiritual, scientific, etc. Environmental pragmatism: the view that philosophers need to focus less on the attempt to solve theoretical issues in environmental ethics and think instead about the best ways to solve real and pressing environmental problems. Pragmatists want to get things done: make changes through action rather than theorizing. Three elements to concept of intrinsic value: Self-owned or inherent property of the thing possessing it: the intrinsically valuable thing is not of merely instrumental value. Intrinsic value is not bestowed by valuers (i. e. humans) That which is intrinsically valuable is self-sufficient. Pleasure, intelligence and honour may be worthy things to pursue, but only because they lead to happiness.
