Aka gi system, composed of all the organs anus tissues that are involved with digestion of food, from lips to anus. Erosion: loss of gastric mucosa due to death of epithelium. Ulcer: deep erosion, penetrates the muscularis mucosa. Food flow through the stomach in sequence unless mixed with a lot of liquid. Hcl and pepsin, secreted by the gastric glands (foveolae) Mucus secreted by the outer lining of the stomach, protect autodigestion. Ulcers that occur in the areas that are exposed to the action of peptic juice. Occurs in the stomach and the first part of the duodenum. Ulceration = imbalance between mucosal defence and aggressive forces. Protective forces = mucous, bicarb, jet like secretion of peptic juice, regeneration of epithelium. Blood carry away h ions and prostaglandin secretion = maintain blood flow and bicarb, mucus secretion. Aggressive forces = infection with helicobacter pylori, nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory agents, smoking, alcohol, corticosteroids, personality and psych stress.
