Theories developed were called the great man theories. Rather than leadership being a quality that individuals possessed, leadership was reconceptualized as the relationship between people in social situations. Leaders differ from the average group member with regards to the following traits: Stogdill"s second survey was more balanced in his description of the role of traits and leadership. Whereas his first survey implied that leadership is determined principally by situational factors and not traits, the second argued more moderately that both traits and situational factors were determinants of leadership. Mann"s study suggested a leader is identified by the following traits: Iq of the leader should not be much higher than that of their followers. Ability to be certain about one"s competency skills. Includes: self-esteem, self-assurance and belief that one can make a difference. Ex: steve jobs believing in his product and confident he would change technology for the better.
