Document Summary

Chapter 7 competitive advantage and business processes. One way is to enhance the product or service through information systems. A second way is through business processes: organizations look to technology to retain customers, reduce costs, and create entry barriers for competitors in the market. Primary activities deal with the main or core parts of the good or service that the organization produces or provides. Support activities are the secondary or ancillary to the good or service that is produced. Organizational processes involve both primary and support activities, although for most organizations greater attention is paid to primary activities because these most often directly impact the customer. Functional systems facilitate the work of a single department or business function. The problem with functional applications is their isolation. These systems are called functional silos because they are designed to work independently of one another. The isolation problems of functional systems led to the development of cross-departmental or cross-functional systems.
