Document Summary

Personality: relatively stable set of psychological characteristics that influences the way an individual interacts with his or her environment. Personality summarizes personal style of dealing with the world. Note: many employers in canadian organizations focus on personality when hiring recent graduates. Situational approach: characteristics of the organizational setting (rewards/punishment etc. ) influence people"s feelings, attitude & behaviour: ex: studies show that job satisfaction attitudes are largely determined by situational factors. A weak situation not clear how a person should behave vs. a strong situation clear expectations. So personality has more impact in weak situations rather than strong (ex: in routine military operations, personality tends to have less impact. Trait activation theory: theory that traits lead to certain behaviours only when the situation makes the need for trait salient. Ie: personality characteristics influence people"s behaviour when the situation calls for a particular personality characteristic. Thus no best personality managers need to appreciate the advantages of employee diversity.
