GERM 1100 Chapter Notes - Chapter Kapitel 4: German Verbs, Built-In Self-Test
Document Summary
Whereas most german verbs use haben as the auxiliary in the perfect tenses, a few common verbs use sein. You will probably find it easiest to memorize sin together with the past participles of those verbs requiring it. Giweverm you can also determine which verbs take sein by remembering that they must fulfill two conditions. They are intansitive, ie. they cannot taken an accusative (direct) object. Examples of such verbs are gehen, kommen and laufen. They express a change of place or condition. Caution: a change in prefix or the addition of a prefix may cause a change in auxiliary because the meaning of the verb changes. The present perfect of the following n-verbs is formed with the present tense of sein (v1) and the past participle (v2) In that case, the auxiliary haben is used: Sie haben mein auto nach hause gefahren they drove my car home.
