Document Summary

In fact, it is so complex that we use a wide range of terms, concepts, and theories to explain what power is and how it works. In this unit, we consider several of these concepts to better understand tourism as an international industry. Let"s begin with one of the most fundamental ideas about power: power is relational. Think about how we typically talk about power we say that a country is powerful or a person has power. We only know a country is powerful if we consider its status and behavior in relation to other countries. Similarly, we can only know if a person has power based on how they interact with other people. When we examine tourism, we are interested in relationships of power, between countries, between companies and organizations, and between individual people. Three concepts of power are particularly helpful for examining tourism, including both mass tourism and new tourism: ideology, discourse, and hegemony (pronounced heh-gem-oh-nee ).
