GEOG 1220 Chapter Notes - Chapter Unit 7: Oxbow Lake, Limnetic Zone, Profundal Zone
Document Summary
Freshwater systems: fresh water: water that is relatively pure, with few dissolved salts, water is constantly moving among the reservoirs via the hydrologic cycle. Only 2. 5% is considered fresh water: a smaller river flowing into a larger one is a tributary, area of land drained by a river is the rivers drainage basin, floodplain area near a river that is periodically flooded. Soils in this area are especially fertile: wetlands systems that combine elements of fresh water and dry land are rich and productive (in fresh water they are called marshes, swamps occur in forested areas) Littoral zone - region ringing the edge of the water. Shallow enough that aquatic plants grow from mud and reach above waters surface. Nutrients and productive plant growth make this region rich in invertebrates: benthic zone - along the bottom of the entire water body from shore to deepest point. Many invertebrates live in the mud feeding and preying on each other.
