Development is a recent concept; before 1945 it was assumed that poor countries were underdeveloped due to their location, in this period internal causes were emphasised . Poverty ie. underdevelopment was inescapable because of (1) geographical factors such as the climate, soils, lacking of natural resources & (2) demographic factors such as a high population growth rate. Other internal causes such as (3) social factors were included such as education and the willingness to adopt new technologies. Developing countries have (4) unequally distributed resources and (5) lack of technology (6) economic factors such as low wages, low productivity, small domestic market and perhaps the economy has a large informal economy. Formal economy divided into 3 sectors; primary- resource extraction, secondary- manufacturing and tertiary- services. It is called the formal sector because the industries are regulated, taxes are paid and there is remuneration (payment of employees)
