Sept 13 intro: challenges of an aging world. Baby boomers comprise 30% of the total canadian pop (46-65yrs) expected to level off after 2031. In developed countries, 16. 5% of the population is 65+ and rates are expected to increase (1/3, etc) ~ 75% of the world"s older population lives in developing countries. Aging issues are linked to many of the well-known challenges facing societies gender inequality, intergenerational relationships, retirement and economic security, universal access to health and social assistance to later life. Social institutions also change as do individuals when growing older (family, healthcare system, labour force) The state of our health is linked to one"s own decisions about diet & lifestyle, availability of resources, quality of care etc. Lifespan: the fixed, finite maximum limit of survival for a species. 1966-1980 baby bust period women had <2 kids on average and pregnancy also took place later in life (mid-late 30s)
