Page 193-211: health status and health care transitions. Health is a multi-dimensional concept: social, physical environment, genetics, lifestyle, health care system, public and private policies. Health is a social process where agency, personal history, social conditions, environment, social construction of health interact. In later life there is variation in the incidence (rate of new cases) and prevalence (current rate) and progression of diseases. Comorbidity of conditions can lead to decreased functioning. Medical model: focuses on the incidence, causes and treatment of disease, emphasis is on treating and curing health problems with surgery, drugs and rehab. More of the focus when life expectancy was shorter. Perpetuates the idea that health status is caused by physiological and biological systems. May cause medical iatrogenesis (illness induced by the medical system: ie. Negative impact of over prescribing drugs, illnesses caused by a stay in the hospital. Social model: views health as having a social, psychological, physiological, biological and genetic basis.
