Document Summary

Chapter 15: learners with special gifts and talents. Students with special gifts excel in some way compared to others of the same age. However, there is little agreement about how giftedness should be de ned. Giftedness is actually whatever we wish to make it. There may be different kinds of giftedness, such as analytic, synthetic and practical intelligence. Giftedness may include the qualities of excellence, rarity, demonstrability, productivity and value. Prevalence depends on de nition; school systems across the united states typically identify about 3 to 5 percent of students as gifted; currently there are no national prevalence estimates of giftedness in canada. Both biological (primarily genetic) and social factors (ex. family, school, peer groups, community) are involved. No one knows precisely how much each of these two factors contribute to giftedness, especially in the individual case. We can alter many social factors but not genetic factors, and more attention needs to be given to how schools foster giftedness.
