Document Summary

Multicultural education: aims to change educational institutions and curricula so they will provide equal educational opportunities to students regardless of their gender, social class, ethnicity, race, exceptionality, or other cultural identity. Multiculturalism involves collective vs. individual pride and guilt in behaviour. Collective guilt is convenient, time-honoured way of perpetuating discrimination, ethnic cleansing, genocide, and other acts of violence. Collective pride can blind people to faults of members and create a false sense of worthiness. Definitions include the following elements: values and typical behavior languages or dialects, nonverbal communication, awareness or general perspectives. Some are voluntary (religion, political party) and some are involuntary (skin colour, gender) May identify with general culture and belong to many different subcultures. Subcultures may share some some common values with general culture but differ in other ways. Number of subcultures has increased because of increase in immigrants and increased recognition and sensitivity to subcultures.
