FRHD 2100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Active Listening, Pillow Talk, Small Talk
Document Summary
Define intimacy and describe how it develops in relationships. We can build a five stage abcde model of romantic relationships consisting of; A (attraction): when two people become aware of and find one another appealing. C (continuation): patterns of interaction remain relatively stable. D (deterioration: begins to deteriorate when it becomes less rewarding than it was. Not so small talk: an audition for a relationship. Often use small talk to help determine whether to develop the relationship. Small talk is a superficial kind of conversation that allows exchange of information but stresses breadth of topic coverage rather than in-depth discussion. The opening line: eye contact and then we being talking if this eye contact is reciprocated. Exchanging name, rank, and serial number: early exchanges include name, occupation, hometown. They discover common ground that may provide a basis for pursuing the conversation. If the other person doesn"t provide this information they might not be interested.
