Divorce: the legal dissolution of a marriage. Divorce is the most common deviation from the traditional family life cycle. It is becoming so common that it may in time come to be considered as (cid:494)normal(cid:495) family event. Divorced families add two or three phases to the life cycle: separation, perhaps remarriage and stabilization in a new family pattern. The symbolic interactionist perspective looks at the individual reasons for divorce. The macro perspectives focus on the wider social context and how these create trends in the divorce rate.
