Chapter 3: the first two years body and mind: In infancy, growth is so rapid and the consequences of neglect are so severe that gains are closely monitored. The brain is the last part of the body to be damaged by malnutrition. Week 4: since experience shapes the infant brain, the infant"s environment plays an important role; pruning eliminated unused connections, where and how much infants sleep is shaped by brain maturation and family practices. This happens in the cortex, usually as the result of a message from one of the sensing organs, such as from the eye to the visual cortex. Pain scale it uses 5 parameters to assess infant pain: facial expression, cry, breathing patterns, movement of arms and legs, and state of arousal. Week 4: care giving and experience matter reflexes become skills if they are practiced and encouraged.
