Document Summary

Week 0: measurements, sig figs, atoms, molecules & ions. A solid is relatively incompressible and maintains its shape and volume. Yet liquids are relatively incompressible and have a fixed volume yet variable shape. The form of matter known as a fluid. And gases are compressible, and have variable volume and shape. Vapour- a term to describe the gaseous state of matter that is usually found in the liquid/solid form. To classify by chemical constitution, we have to understand the difference between physical and chemical changes, and physical and chemical properties. Physical changes- is a change in the form of matter but not chemical identity. E. g. dissolving salt in water creates liquid like salt water yet there is no change in chemical identity. Chemical changes- are chemical reactions are changes in which matter is simply transformed into a new kind of matter. Physical properties- characteristics we observe without changing the chemical identities of materials.
