BIOM 3200 Chapter 16: BIOM 3200 Week 11 The Respiratory System

71 views13 pages

Document Summary

By the end of this unit you should be able to: Respiration involves three separate but related functions: (1) ventilation (moves air in and out of lungs), (2) gas exchange (between blood and air in lungs), and (3) oxygen utilization (by tissues). Ventilation and gas exchange are collectively called external respiration, and gas exchange and oxygen utilization are collectively called internal respiration. As a result this causes in coming air to have more oxygen and less carbon dioxide than expired air. This happens very rapidly bc of the large surface area of the lung and the very small diffusion distance between the blood and air. Gas exchange occurs in air sacs known as alveoli. The diffusion rate between the alveolar air and the blood depends on the distance separating them (which is very thin). There are two types of alveolar cells, type 1 and type 2.
