Echo park victory lead to the launch of a campaign for a naional policy of wilderness preservaion: was established under the wilderness act in 1964, did not end the conlict between wilderness values and those of civilizaion. They were inding that civilizaion was the cause of much of man"s tension and unhappiness. Wilderness provided an escape for those who needed it so that the malcontents didn"t turn to thrills for war and crime. Its silence and solitude eased stains and encourage contemplaion: he saw the estheic value of wilderness, comparing it to great works of art, he fought to preserve areas and to keep undeveloped areas just that. He understood however that wilderness was hard to choose to win.
