Joe knowles posed as having spent 60 days alone in the wilderness living enirely of the land: he was highly praised and seen as a hero unil it was revealed that he was a fraud. Just showed how the appreciaion of wilderness had become widely popular: by the end of the 19th century wilderness no longer dominated, allowing for this shit in view. The average person now approached wilderness as a vacaioner rather than a conqueror. The solitude and hardship that was once feared by the pioneers was atracive to city dwellers. Now ciies were regarded with the same hosility wilderness once was. People began to sympathize with the indian and idenifying the disease whiskey and decepion of civilizaion. Civilizaion had brought confusion, corrupion, and debilitaing overabundance. The wilderness began to be associated with virility, toughness, and savagery quality that deined itness in darwinian terms.
