Civilizaion had a destroying power as well as creaing dominant american purpose: casualies included the indian, bufalo and the froniersman (a class of remarkable men in their virtues and faults, wilderness was agreed to be doomed. Pioneers would celebrate but the gentleman would feel only regret. George catlin suggested that the government could protect the wilderness in a magniicent park . Horace greely warned that once the wilderness disappeared it would not be replaced easily. Thoreau desired to prevent the exincion of indians and animals but also that wilderness was important for the preservaion of civilizaion.
