Living things are composed of cells (the smallest unit of life) Living things use energy and raw materials: metabolism refers to all chemical reactions that occur within the cells of living things. Living things maintain homeostasis: relatively constant and se;f-correcting internal environment of a living organism. Populations of living things evolve and have adaptive traits (traits that help survive in the natural environment) Prokaryotes - small single celled organisms that lack a nucleus or other internal compartments: the two domains bacteria and archaea consist of prokaryotes. The third domain is eukarya: eukaryotic - cells contain a nucleus and complex internal organelles, sub-divided into 4 kingdoms: protists, fungi, plants and animals. Population: individuals of the same species living in a distinct geographic area. Community: all living species that can potentially interact in a particular geographic area.
