63 views3 pages

Document Summary

As we mature we place less emphasis on our physical characteristics and more emphasis on our psychological states. Three aspects of the self: self-knowledge, self-esteem, self-control. Self-schemas: an organized body of knowledge about the self (attitudes, preferences, traits) that influences what people notice, think, and remember about themselves. Our desire to see ourselves in a positive light can influence which of our past actions we are most likely to remember. Many asian and collectivist cultures have an interdependent view of the self, which is defining one"s relationships to other people; recognizing that one"s behaviour is often determined by the thoughts, feelings, and actions of others. Alcohol abuse, binge eating, suicide, etc. are all ways in which we try to turn the internal spotlight away from oneself. When people are self-aware they are more likely to follow their moral standards. East asians are more likely to have an outsider perspective on the self, viewing themselves through the eyes of other people.
