Document Summary

Memory: the faculty for recalling past events and learning. There are 3 main activities involved in memory: encoding: the process of recording information in your brain, storage: the retention of information for future use, retrieval: recovering information later, when it is needed. The information-processing model of memory suggests that information must pass through three stages (memory stores) before it can become a fully implanted memory. Those stages are sensory memory, working memory, and long term memory. Sensory memories are basically a clone of whatever sensory input the brain received that helps to keep the information alive a bit longer so we can decide whether to pay attention to it. For this reason visual sensory memory is also called iconic memory. Information is then passed to short term memory, which has the capacity to 7+/- 2 pieces of information at a time.
