Document Summary

Organisms that capture energy from sunlight are called phototrophs. I. e. plants use sunlight to convert co2 and water into 02 and glucose. Other organisms derive energy from organic molecules such as glucose. Energy of molecule is converted to energy carried in bonds of atp. Plants make their own organic sources of carbon. Heterotrophs eat other organisms for their organic molecules. Building/breakdown of sugars for harnessing/release of energy is driven by chem rxns in cell. Products of one are the reactants of the next. Catabolism: rxns break down molecules into smaller unites, produce atp. Anabolism: build molecules from smaller unites and require energy input, usually atp. Of a system is the system"s capacity to do work. For a cell this is synthesizing dna, rna, proteins, pumping in and out substances, moving vesicles between the cell. Moving objects because they work, resulting in their movement and surrounding matter. Depends on structure of object and its position in the surroundings.
