Bulk-feeders- most species, ingest large pieces of food, may use tenticles, pincers, claws, fangs, jaws, teeth. Digestive compartments- vacuoles (sponges), gastrovascular cavity (flatworms), or alimentary canal (most animals) 4 steps of digestion: ingestion, digestion, absorption, elimination. Digestion- breaking down food molecules, first mechanically (teeth), then chemically (hydrolysis). All animals need proteins, fats, and carbs, but cannot use these materials, only their broken down molecules. Absorption- cells lining digestive tract absorb products of digestion (amino acids and simple sugars), nutrients travel through blood to cells, provide energy or stored as fat. Elimination- undigested material passes out of digestive tract.
