Chapter 2 : the chemical basis of life (pg. Matter- anything that occupies space and has mass (weight) Element- a substance that cannot be broken down to other substances by ordinary chemical means; there are 92 elements occurring in nature. Abundant elements- oxygen (o), carbon (c), hydrogen (h), and nitrogen (n)- 96% together. ^^ these are the main elements in proteins, sugars, and fats. Other elements in the body are magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine. These are involved in bone formation, nerve signalling, and dna synthesis. Trace elements- an element that is essential to life but only required in extremely minute quantities. Compound- a substance consisting of 2+ different elements combined in a fixed ratio. Few elements exist in pure form in nature. Atom- the smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of an element; 1 million atoms stretch to be the size of a period on a piece of paper.
