Document Summary

Patriarchy is a system structure in which men dominate, oppress and exploit women. At the most abstract level, patriarchy is a system of social relations. It is composed of six structures: the patriarchal mode of production, the patriarchal relations of paid work, patriarchal relations in the state, male violence, patriarchal relations in sexuality, and the patriarchal relations in cultural institutions (214). They are defined by social relation in each structure. However, they have a limited duration through time and space (220). The patriarchal mode of production is a patriarchal structure operating at the economic level. Women"s labour is expropriated by their husbands within marriages. This is a major differentiation between men and women and has significant effects on social relations; itself is a form of inequality (222). The patriarchal relations of paid work form one other patriarchal structure operating at the economic level. The key feature of it is closure of access by men against women.
