He placed a hungry cat in a cage (with a lever such that if the lever is pressed the cage door will open) and food outside the cage where it can be seen. The cat made several attempts to get to the food but was unable to. However, when the cat accidentally hit the lever, the door opened and the cat got food. From then, the cat had figure out that "if i press this thing, i get food" so as soon as the cat was put back, it pressed the lever and got food (yay! He put rats in a cage (again, the cage had a lever). There was also a device in the cage. The rats explored the new area by sniffing and doing what-not.
