Document Summary

Tip of microelectrode is positioned near neuron. Eye muscles are paralyzed to prevent eye movement. Receptive field: area in the visual field where it"s possible to cause neurons to fire. Striate neurons (the ones similar to the other 2 neurons are rare) Receptive fields in fovea are smaller greater acuity. Monocular: each neuron has a receptive field in only one eye. On-center cells: neuron fires when light is shone at center of receptive field + inhibits when light is shone on periphery. Off-center cells: neuron fires when light is shone on the periphery of receptive field + inhibits when light is shone on center. Both cells respond best to contrast to maximize firing, light should be shone only on center or periphery while leaving the other area dark. Neurons are constantly active even when there is no stimulus. Simple cells: receptive fields are rectangular with an on and off region respond to straight lines.
