Document Summary

Perception: experiences resulting from stimulation of the sense. A process similar to reasoning or problem solving. Perceptual rule (ie. when objects, like rope, overlap, the one underneath usually continues behind the one on top), which may be based on the person"s past experiences. Example: a lady running on the beach sees an object from a distance. As she approaches the object she realizes it is an umbrella (memory), the one lying under the lifeguard stand yesterday. (adding information) still running, she sees a bundle of rope and assumes it is a long, continuous piece (experience). Perception involves dynamic processes that accompany and support out actions. This chapter focuses on: explaining the mechanisms responsible for perception. The role of perception extends beyond identifying objects or helping us take action within our environment. Looking at the city scenery on top of a building, you can easily and quickly identify things, such as buildings, colour, and streams.
