Document Summary

The outward behavior and emoions of the self" is situaion-dependent, termed the social self. Introspecion is not an accurate means of understanding the self. Other"s percepions of one"s self, while also distorted, are sill more accurate than one"s own. Self-schemas are unconscious mental organizing structures that assimilate social informaion in the context of people"s beliefs and feelings about themselves. People are socialized from birth by significant others (family members and other important people in their life). This is the foundaion of the social self. Again, a person"s social self is derived from their current situaion, and diferent selves are evoked in diferent situaions. People rely on social comparisons to learn about their own abiliies, aitudes, and personal traits. Relected self-appraisals are what you believe others think about you. Trait self-esteem is a stable part of idenity; state self-esteem changes. Both are informed by coningencies of self-worth and social inclusion. Self-evaluaion is used for both self-enhancement and self-veriicaion.
