Document Summary

Elaboration likelihood model (elm): (2 routes to persuasion) theory of persuasion that proposes that persuasive messages can influence attitudes by two different routes, central or peripheral. People follow central when they think carefully about information that is pertinent (central) to the true merits of the person, object, or position being advocated. Ex. following the central route while listening to a political debate will follow their arguments on why they would make a good leader and will consider whether those arguments are factual. Ie. the attitudes are influenced by the strength of the argument. When they don"t want to think about things, don"t want to/cant put in the effort. People taking peripheral route tend to base their attitudes on heuristics. Ex. if this person talks for a long time they must have a valid point. C vs p route doesnt lead to more pos or neg attitudes. Are your goals and interest in line with the topic: ability to think.
