Ch 5 & pt 11: mental illness is a lack of balance in life. Normative changes can mimic certain mental disorders: can mask true psychopathology. May just be mourning loss of a spouse, or may be the start of a depressive episode. Lifecyle factors: examine their behavior at the point in their life and determine if its normal behavior or pathological. Practical considerations: sensory, motor, cognitive limitations: age a(cid:374)d fu(cid:374)ctio(cid:374)i(cid:374)g are(cid:374)"t always correlated. Heterogeneity: comorbidity, likely that more than one thing is going on, multiple methods of assessment. Mental status exam: assesses current state of mind/ mental abilities. Specific symptom measures: depression scale, measures of how person is able to function in everyday life. Disturbance in executive functioning: loss of ability to plan and organize. Family of disorders: characterized by cog and behavioral deficits. Causes: reversible (important to treat early, otherwise they can become irreversible) Medical condition that affects brain tissue/function but doesn"t destroy it.
