Experimental design: the general plan for selecting participants, assigning participants to experimental conditions, controlling extraneous variables, and gathering data. Zhong and leonardelli asked participants to write about a memory where they were either socially included or excluded. It was found that participants estimated that the room they were in was colder when they remembered being excluded. The two group design is the most parsimonious available. Using one iv and two groups is the simplest to execute. Condition: one of the levels of the independent variable in an experiment. Control group: a level of an independent variable that is intended to represent "no treatment" or a neutral condition. Treatment group: the participants in an experiment who are exposed to the level of the independent variable that involves an intervention. Placebo group: a control group that is exposed to an inert treatment.
