PSYCO105 Chapter 15: Final Exam Review.
Document Summary
Stress has been viewed by various theorists as a stimulus; as a response that has cognitive, physiological, and behavioural components; and as a person-situation interaction- that is, a transaction between the person and the environment. A transactional model of stress specifies interactions among situational factors, cognitive appraisal processes, physiological responses, and behavioural attempts to cope. This model by its nature predicts individual differences in response to stressors. Stressors are events that place physical or psychological demands on organisms. The stressfulness of a situation is defined by the balance between demands and resources. Cognitive appraisal processes play an essential role in people"s responses to stressors. People appraise the nature of the demands, the resources available to deal with them, their possible consequences, and the personal meaning of these consequences. Distortions at any of these levels can result in inappropriate stress responses.
