Document Summary
Chapter 7: human memory: there are 3 key processes involved in memory, encoding. This involves forming a memory code: storage, retrieval. Involves maintaining encoded information in memory over time. However, if someone in another conversation says their name, they will hear it: many theorists believe that the location of this filter is not fixed, but is flexible, this depends on the cognitive load . If a task requires intense concentration, there is less processing power left over to interpret distractions. If the task does not require much concentration, then you can also pay attention to distractions: research shows that only one attention consuming task can be effectively handled by the human brain at one time. Levels of processing: fergus craik and robert lockhart proposed that there are three different levels that verbal information can be encoded at, structural encoding (shallow) Emphasizes the physical structure of stimuli: phonemic encoding (middle) This involves saying the word: semantic encoding (deepest)
