Assumes that our senses are trustworthy and allows for objective study and comparison of theories. Chapter one: psychology: the evolution of a science. Psychology: the scientific study of mind and behavior. Monkies with localized brain lesions did not behave as phrenology would suggest: paul broca"s discrepant finding about language. Patients would show language impairments even when the language area was undamaged: franz gall was a poor methodologist. Kept very poor notes and records, it was near impossible to test his claims: phrenology has fallen out of favour, but because it was empirically testable, it led to much of our current knowledge of brain function. Psychology as a science: human interest in mind and behavior is ancient, but we have only recently begun to study them with the focus of empiricism.
