Democracy: ruled by the people that signified rights and liberties for citizens and civil liberties such as freedom of speech. Political rights: rights to participate in political life, voting and right to join political associations. Civil rights: rights of the individual to participate in civic life, freedom of assembly, speech, access to information and equal access to institutions. Regime: form of government that has rules and institutions. Democratic regime: predominantly democratic institutions, basic civil rights and regulations free elections. Procedural definition of democracy: minimal standards, procedures and rules a country should have to govern political life. Freedom to access info, freedom of the press. Freedom of assembly to join interest groups. Two more criteria to see if a place is democratic: Substantive democracy definition of democracy: a a policies democratic status as dependent on the stiff action of certain substantive ends, such as the extension of broad rights and reduction of income inequality. Participation, social inclusion and civil society involvement.
