EAS205 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Hydrosphere, List Of U.S. States And Territories By Elevation
Document Summary
Any body of flowing water confined in channel (river or large stream) Region from which a stream draws water (divide separates drainage basins) The size of the stream is related to the size of the drainage basin. Evaporation and precipitation in and out of atmosphere. Volume of water flowing past given point in specified length of time [area x average velocity] Varies with season, weather and human activity. Traction load: heavier debris; rolled, dragged and pushed along the bottom of the stream. Bed load: intermediate material; carried in short hops along the stream bed (by process of saltation) Suspended load: light/fine material; moved along suspended in stream, clouds up a stream (muddy appearance) Load: total quantity of material that a stream transports. Measure of total load of material a stream can move. The faster the water flows, the more water is present, the more material can be moved. Availability of sediments and soluble material (e. g. solid bedrock vs sand/ soil)
