Chapter 1: Knowing God Due May 14, 2018
-Gospel – good news
o“good news of great joy for all the people” (Lk 2:10)
-“The heart of the Christian message is Jesus Christ”
-“living is Christ” (Phil 1:21)
-“The message is a person. To come to know and understand the message we must come
to know and understand the person.”
oCyclical
-No different between knowing about and knowing personally
-We can know by what is available to us
-Textbooks and academics won’t teach us everything. We need some representation of
love and we need to love
-We can learn and “come to know” the message of salvation
-“We can know a lot about Jesus without meeting and responding to him as a person”
-“Both the Old and New Testament, the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, insist that to
know God is to love, to obey and to believe.”
-“Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love” (1 Jn 4:8)
-Knowing God is active, you can’t just understand knowledge (possession)
o“Whole life-orientation”
o“Believing, trusting and doing”
-“God is not “known” unless God’s will is done, and it is only in the doing that God is
truly known… It is because Jesus did the will of God perfectly that he could claim to
know the Father best. It is because of his obedience that he can be our model of faith.”
-You do not need to know a whole lot and you could still have a personal relationship with
God

-We can meet the lord with personal prayer
-“Now I know only in part; then I will know fully even as I have been fully known” (1
Cor 13:12)
-To love someone is to know someone, you want to know and understand them on a
deeper level.
-“A true love relationship cannot be sustained without a growth in intimacy, a progressive
revelation of person to person, a deeper and deeper knowledge.”

-“The justification for studying theology is that it sustains and expands our love-
relationship with God in the person of Jesus”
-We as teachers are “entrusted” to develop a “love-relationship with God as an expression
of their faith” of these young people we teach”
oThis is very important to understand for our teaching
-Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)
oCatechism: “an education in the faith of children, young people, and adults.”
(CCC 5)

merely in touch, but in communion, intimacy, with Jesus Christ, only he can lead
