Document Summary

Heterotrophs but do notingest (eat) their food unlike animals; instead absorb nutrients from the environment outside of its body. Breaks down complex molecules by secreting hydrolytic enzymes first their enzymes can even digest cellulose & lignin. Use enzymes to penetrate cell walls to absorb nutrients from the cells their various ways of absorbing nutrients reflect their roles in ecological communities. Decomposers - break down & absorb nutrients from dead organic material. Parasites - absorb nutrients from living host cells, often pathogenic. Mutualists - also absorb nutrients from a host organism but they do something beneficial in return. Only few species grow only as yeasts. Hypha - consists of tubular cell walls surrounding the plasma membrane. & cytoplasm of the cells the cell walls are strengthened by chitin (cellulose in plants) the hyphae are usually divided into septa. Specialized hyphae called haustria allows fungi to extract nutrients from / exchange nutrients with their plant hosts.
