Since the beginning of the twenty-first century: Men"s participation in the workforce has started to shrink as women"s participation has increased men"s participation is decreasing much slower than women"s participation is increasing. The number of women in the workforce has started to decline also although the rates of participation are still much higher than in the 1980"s. Many north americans still believe in the male breadwinner/female housewife model even though our lives no longer reflect it. How much a man earns is still tied to his masculinity. Deviance neutralization: where a dual-earner couple may understate her income or exaggerate his in order to preserve the idea of the male breadwinner; both members may regard her work as more flexible, no matter what her job is.
