CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
Creativity contributes to organizational innovation, effectiveness and survival.
Creativity refers to the production of novel and useful ideas.
Innovation refers to the stage of implementing creative ideas.
Creative work in organizations is frequently carried out by teams as is the resolution of major
problems.
THREATS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Threats (major problems) possess the following attributes:
negative and uncontrollable, of having the potential for major loss,
and the feeling of lacking the knowledge and skills to resolve the issue
Opportunities (requiring creativity) possess the following attributes:
positive and controllable, of allowing one the freedom of whether and how to act,
of offering the potential for major gain, and the feeling of possessing the knowledge and
skills required to resolve the issue.
Threat and opportunity have the common attributes of:
being issues of high priority and major importance, of requiring urgent action
of being challenging to resolve
MODEL OF CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING
Step 1: Define the Problem
Include those with relevant knowledge and skills with respect to the problem
Differentiate fact from opinion
Collect as much information as possible about the problem
Refrain from jumping to conclusions about the nature of the problem
Identify what standard or expectation is violated or why it is a problem
Determine the consequences if the problem is left unresolved
Identify underlying causes
State the problem explicitly
Step 2: Generate Alternative Solutions
Specify alternatives that solve the problem
Postpone evaluating alternatives so that the first reasonable alternative is not
chosen before consideration of better alternatives
Be sure all involved individuals generate alternatives, Build on others’ ideas
Specify both short- and long-term consequences
Step 3: Evaluate and Select an Alternative
Evaluate relative to an optimal, rather than simply satisfactory standard
Evaluate relative to important goals which are weighted for importance
Evaluate thoroughly and systematically against goals
Evaluate main effects and side effects
State the selected alternative explicitly to avoid disagreements
