First developed by francis galton, a theory and later a social movement that believed in the improvement of the human species through selective mating. Eugenics theories were used to sterilize thousands of individuals considered feebleminded and became the basis for the mass extermina- tions undertaken by the nazi regime. A societal rule that forbids sexual relations between those defined as kin, or family. Key points: there is little evidence that human behaviour is the result of instincts, humans are of the animal world but unique within it. Humans are the most flexible and adapt- able of all species: biological determinist arguments, which certain aspects if human behaviour as being primarily the result of inborn characteristics, remain very popular.
