Milgram"s study: milgram investigated how many people would obey authority to violate ethical standards. Participants shocked confederates when made an error in reciting words: voltage from 0 to 450 volts, slight shock-danger: severe shock- xxx. Zimbardo- stanford prison study: university students assigned to roles of prisoners and guards. Set up a prison in the basement of a stanford building with cells, uniforms, nightsticks. Some social psychologists argue study an example of obedience to authority: was flawed, but does reflect prisons in that guards have power, told to be harsh. Social situation affects behaviour, causing people to behave out of character. Self-serving biases affecting attribution: the bias to choose the most flattering and forgiving attributions of our own lapses. Group-serving bias- tendency to view groups we belong to favourably. Prominent in individualist societies, not collectivist: the bias to believe that the world is fair.
