Document Summary

Psychology = psyche (greek for soul) + logos (study of a subject) Wasn"t until the early 18th century did the term psychology gain more usage. Socrates, plato and aristotle debated the signi cance. Aristotle: memory consists of 3 principles of association; similarity, contrast and contiguity. Descartes argued the duality of body and mind that they were separate and fundamentally di erent (mind being the province of god) Helmholtz agreed for the separation of sensation and perception as topics of study. A new science is born - wundt and hall. Wundt made psychology an independent study (1879) wundt established the rst formal laboratory in the university of leipzig. Wundt"s primary focus was consciousness - the awareness of immediate experience. Between 1883 - 1893, there were approx. 24 new psychological research laboratories - many started by his students. The apa is the worlds largest organization. Structuralism was led by edward titchener (student of wundt)
