Document Summary

Semantic memory contains general knowledge that is not tied to the time when the information was learned. Episodic memory made up of chronological, or temporally dated, recollections of personal experience. Encoding getting information in, involves forming a memory code. Storage maintaining encoded information in memory over time. Retrieval recovering info from memory stores, getting it out. Memories change they are rough reconstructions rather than exact copies of past events. Forgetting may be due to deficiencies in any of the three key processes in memory (encoding, storage, and retrieval) Mental travel time may help increase our happiness and reduce our stress. Attention involves focusing awareness on a narrowed range of stimuli or events. It is often linked to a filter that screens out most potential stimuli while allowing a select few to pass through into conscious awareness. It is critical to the encoding of memories. High load tasks consuming much of our attention capacity, selection tends to occur early.
