Melanin protects the dna from damage due to uv radiation and is essential in proper eyesight. Genetic basis for albinism described by archibald garrod in 1908. Albinism in humans is caused by a defect in one of four genes that control the synthesis of melanin. Hopi albinism is most likely oculocutaneous albinism type 2 due to a defect in the oca gene on chromosome 15. Albinism is found in almost all human ethnic groups. Hopi albinos were considered important and special. Having a number of albino people was considered a good sign. Albinos held titles of high power and given special treatment.
