Reading 2: psychological evaluation for child custody (sparta & stahl, 2006) Child custody evaluations can be difficult and challenging due to varied and specific needs, complexity. Some examples of professional practice guidelines to guide child custody evaluations include: guidelines for child custody evaluations during divorce proceedings , specialty guidelines for forensic psychologists . Legal interests related to a child"s best interests : all 50 states have adopted this standard with varying specificity. Judges or juries can make the decision about child custody, yet most are made by the parents without need for assessment/court hearings. Psychologists need to be aware of the psychological and legal constructs of a child"s best interests, such as the degree to which one parent can facilitate a relationship with the other. The effects of divorce on children/ getting started: the evaluator has various jobs to ensure these effects are minimal, and ensure that all ethical standards are met.
